1. Why are permits necessary?

Building, electrical, and plumbing permits are required for most home improvements or additions so that the Building Department may inspect the job for safety, zoning compliance and sound construction practice.

The whole reason behind having Building Codes and requiring building permits is to help protect the health, safety and general welfare of the residents of the community. Also, it provides a way of insuring that the minimum standards for construction are adhered to, and to insure that contractors used by the homeowner are licensed and bonded with the Village of Tinley Park. In this way, the Village is helping to insure that the work is being done properly and that the best interest of the homeowner is being protected.

2. What requires a permit?

Before beginning a project, it is important to check with the Building Department at 708-444-5100 to make sure whether a permit is or is not required. Call the department for information if you do not see your project listed under our Commercial Project Permits or our Residential Project Permits.

3. Who is authorized to make home improvements?

The homeowner is permitted to make any changes or improvements to his own property except for changing the electric service, which must be done by a licensed electrical contractor. However, if a contractor is used by the owner to perform certain work, the contractor must be licensed and bonded in the Village of Tinley Park before starting any work. Also, it is the responsibility of the homeowner to be sure that a building permit is obtained prior to start of work. Failure to obtain a building permit could result in a fine.

4. How do I apply for a permit?

When applying for a permit at the Building Department, homeowners must present one copy of the plat of survey (normally provided at your closing), and any pertinent drawings, blueprints or sketches. On the plat of survey you will be required to locate the proposed improvement and provide necessary dimensions. You will also be required to fill out an application for the permit.

When the permit is issued, you will receive a Building Permit Placard to be displayed at the project site until the work is completed. You will also receive an inspection sheet of required inspections for your specific project. Once again, these inspections are made to promote good, safe construction, and are made at intervals during the project.

2. Can the Fire Department visit my block party?

The Tinley Park Fire Department will, upon written request (with an event date, time and contact numbers), schedule an appearance at your block party. Requests will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. Due to the nature of our business, we will do what we can to accommodate your block party. Call the Fire Prevention Bureau at (708) 444-5200 for details or you can use a Fire Department Block Party Request Form.

3. Do you conduct child safety seat inspections?

The Fire Department does not conduct child safety seat inspections. The Tinley Park Police Department's Crime Prevention office conducts child safety seat inspections by appointment for Tinley Park residents only. For more information, please call Crime Prevention at (708) 444-5326.

4. Can you give fire station tours to community groups?

Yes, the Fire Department will, upon written request at least 10 days in advance, schedule fire station tours for your scout group, preschool or service organization. Call the Fire Prevention Bureau at (708) 444-5200 for more information.

5. How do I file an incident report request?

If you need to request an incident report, please complete our Incident Report Request Form. This form can be faxed to (708) 444-5299; emailed to the Tinley Park Fire Department; mailed to the department at 17355 South 68th Court, Tinley Park, IL 60477 or brought to our administrative office between the hours of 8:30 am and 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

Anyone requesting ambulance reports or records should contact the Village’s ambulance provider, Trace Ambulance, at (708) 532-0088.

6. How do I dispose of hazardous materials?

Police Department

1. When is curfew?

Persons younger than 17 cannot be in a public area between 12:01 a.m. and 6 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, and between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. on Sundays through Thursdays.

2. Who should I notify about a stray animal or animal problem?

The Police Department has an animal control officer who can be contacted at 708-444-5315.

3. When is administrative court held?

Administrative court begins at 5 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month in the Jogmen Center of the Police Department, 7850 W. 183rd Street. Check our Administrative Court page for specific times related to the violation.

4. Can I park overnight on the street?

Parking on the street is not allowed between 2 and 5 a.m. However, you can obtain permission from the Police Department to park on the street during this time due to special circumstances. You need permission each night for a maximum of three consecutive nights. An Overnight Parking Form must be filled out, or call the Police Department at 708-532-9111.

5. Can I buy vehicle stickers, commuter tokens and pay water bills at the Police Department?

Yes. The Police Department is open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day for those services.

6. Can my car straddle the sidewalk when on my driveway?

No. For safety reasons, it is illegal for a car to be parked over the sidewalk.
